15) INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT SYSTEM- UNDERSTANDING AND IMPLEMENTATION WORKSHOP

What is Integrated Water Resource Management?

Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is an approach that emphasizes coordinated and sustainable management of water resources. It promotes an integrated and inclusive approach to water management, taking into account the interconnectedness of water systems and the needs of various sectors and stakeholders.

Key principles of IWRM include stakeholder participation, sustainable water use, ecosystem protection, effective water governance, and adaptation to climate change. By adopting IWRM principles, organizations and water management authorities can optimize water allocation, minimize conflicts, protect ecosystems, and ensure the long-term availability of water resources for social, economic, and environmental needs.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the various areas of knowledge and understanding that will be useful as they propose, design, implement and monitor the progress of IWRM processes and later monitor the success of those plans.

About This Course

Welcome to the Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) programme. The purpose of the programme is to provide practitioners in the water sector, including Policy makers and Professional with an interest in addressing water related issues, a comprehensive introduction to the various areas of knowledge and understanding that will be useful as they propose, design, implement and monitor the progress of IWRM processes and later monitor the success of those plans.

The training aims to gather IWRM practitioners and policy makers to exchange views and perspectives on promoting IWRM in Zambia. The training will (i) draw on the experiences of other countries in the region in spearheading IWRM and (ii) suggest potential challenges and opportunities for Organisations dealing in and or affected by water management issues in Zambia.

Why your Organisation should Participate in  Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)

Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) training is particularly crucial for your organizations due to the Zambia’s unique water resource challenges. Here are the key reasons why IWRM training is important for your organisation

  1. Water Scarcity and Management: Zambia faces water scarcity issues, especially during dry seasons. IWRM training equips organizations with the knowledge and tools to assess water availability, implement efficient water use practices, and develop strategies for sustainable water management. This enables organizations to optimize water allocation, minimize wastage, and ensure reliable water supply for their operations.
  2. Climate Change Resilience: Zambia is susceptible to climate change impacts, including changing rainfall patterns and increased frequency of droughts and floods. IWRM training helps organizations understand these climate risks and develop adaptive strategies. By integrating climate change considerations into water resources management, organizations can enhance their resilience to climate-related challenges and minimize disruptions to their operations.

Water Quality and Pollution Control: Ensuring water quality is essential for both human health and environmental sustainability. IWRM training equips organizations with the knowledge and skills to monitor water quality, prevent

  1. pollution, and implement appropriate treatment measures. This is particularly important for industries that generate wastewater or operate in sensitive water catchment areas, enabling them to comply with water quality regulations and protect water resources.
  2. Stakeholder Collaboration: Effective stakeholder engagement is vital for successful water resources management. IWRM training helps your organizations understand the importance of engaging with communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders. By fostering collaborative relationships and involving stakeholders in decision-making processes, organizations can build trust, address social equity concerns, and ensure that water management practices reflect the needs and aspirations of all parties involved.
  3. Sustainable Development: IWRM training promotes the principles of sustainable development, which align with Zambia’s national development goals. By integrating social, economic, and environmental considerations into water resources management, organizations can contribute to sustainable development in the country. This includes ensuring equitable access to water resources, protecting ecosystems, and supporting the livelihoods of local communities that depend on water.

IWRM training is of utmost importance for your organizations as it enables you to address water scarcity challenges, adapt to climate change impacts, manage water quality, engage stakeholders effectively, and contribute to sustainable development.
